Game Review & Impressions
---------------------------------------------------
Another early game which pushes the envelope in terms of using 2D sprite scaling and colour cycling to create a sense of depth, Mirax feels like an early progenitor to Sega's After Burner. The gameplay, shooting ground-based structures and flying UFOs whilst dodging incoming missiles and phaser blasts, feels instantly familiar.
Each round commences with the player having to fire their ship's guns manually, but destroying one of the special UFOs which appears from the top of the screen bestows the ship with automatic fire, which gives your weary trigger finger a much needed rest. You need to lead your targets to a degree because the aiming reticule is an indication where your shots will land and the energy bolts actually have travel time, which you need to account for.
Mirax is a simple game and an addictive score attack challenge. This would have looked impressive in any arcade line-up back then, and it's still worth a shot now.
