MMORPG VS TableTop : How Close Can They Merge
Look, I know not everyone agrees with this philosophy, but I do believe that the MMORPG genres should be trying to emulate a really good TableTop RPG or TTRPG, but how close can those two merge or be similiar enough realistically? That's what I'm going to dive into today and I hope you will join me until the end of the video as we discuss the differences between the MMORPG possibilities versus the infinite possibilities of TableTop which takes place squarely in the mind of the Dungeon Master and the Players. Sit back, relax, and open up your mind a bit as we break apart this philosophy, and hit that Like button and please Subscribe for more RPG content of all kinds!
First Up, the IMPACT to the world and story. This is something that TTRPGs do extremely well. The players' actions can directly impact everything happening in the world, because there are 2 to 6 people generally speaking, the entire world can revolve around the players. But this isn't always true, sometimes the point of the campaign might be that the world is too vast and complicated, but in some way or another you can believe that any good campaign or story has the players changing the world to some degree. MMORPGs struggle with this because there are thousands of players on a given server. Many MMORPGs have been able to find solutions to this, even EverQuest had the Sleeper which would completely alter a server once awakened. Or Dark Age of Camelot having the Realm Wars and the results affecting all the players on their Realm. Then games like Guild Wars 2 tried to make dynamic quests out in the world that would change depending on if the players were able to complete it or not. And in the future, the MMORPG Ashes of Creation is making their node based system where the players will determin what type of content will actually be available in an area based on their actions. If Ashes pulls it off they will come the closest to giving players in an MMORPG the agency to IMPACT the world they are playing in. But let's take a look at the opposite end of the spectrum, SHOULD an MMORPG allow players to make such heavy impacts on the world so often? Let's take a look at Pantheon Rise of the Fallen, their upcoming MMORPG is more about the world being something you fight against, but also in the right circumstances, could work more in your favor, such as weather and casting spells, or the advantages and disadvantages of day and night. Not to say that all titles can't have a bit of both, Ashes for example also has an advanced weather system that allows players to take advantage of, but the point here is that both TTRPGs and MMORPGs are both all about a world made by the developer and players are dropped in and allowed an opportunity to overcome the challenges of that world, but the difference is that one has a smaller amount of players to satisfy, while the other has an overwhelming amount of players. In a TTRPG it is perfectly okay for the players to feel like they are special or they are "the heroes" of the tale, afterall, the story was written and being designed around their entertainment. And many MMORPGs have tried to follow that same route, Elder Scrolls Online for example is all about your character, with a dizzying amount of stories of heroism and saving the day from the clutches of all sorts of evil and plans to thwart. But then there is the complaint of it being a single player game and not quite the Massively Mulitplayer Online experience the player signed up for. MMORPGs like EverQuest went for more of a "here's a world, you can get powerful in it and defeat the many challenges we have made for you, but you will have to work together" instead and you can't say it didn't work, it's been 23 years and counting and EverQuest is still going strong. Can MMORPGs like Elder Scrolls Online last 23 years with it's model?
