The arcade version of GT24! You know, the Saturn racing game I posted way too much of?
Is the arcade version better than the Saturn version? Absolutely!
Is it a good game? No!
This game is a couple of decisions shy of being an alright-ish old school arcade racing game. As it stands, this game has a very distinctive off-brand, "that one arcade game at the birthday party of the kid you don't really like but you were forced to go so you're stuck with this for the next of the evening" feel to it. It controls okay until you get to the drifting, which just feels slippery and overdone. The crash physics are really annoying and hitting any car even once is almost always the end of the run since it's pretty much impossible to get 1st place after that. Your car can get damaged and it affects performance and the cars do have a satisfying damage model, at least.
Perhaps the most bizarre and questionable decision of the game is how the rival cars are handled. They're just really inconvenient obstacles, more or less, rather than racers. They also act in a semi scripted manner so a lot of the time they'll do very similar things at the same spot every race. The actual weird bit is how many there are. There are supposed to be about 14 racers in the speedway? Yet during the race, you are CONSTANTLY overtaking dozens of rivals every single lap. The course is absolutely crowded! Where did these racers even come from? If the implication is that you're lapping them, that makes no sense, lapping people during the first turn of the second lap... Having a near infinite amount of cars driving around seems to be there solely to give you something to dodge and possibly crash against at every turn. Very annoying.
Overall, I guess if you're stuck at the weird kid's birthday party, this game is an alright pass time. Otherwise, play better Model 2 games than this if you can help it.
