A prominent leaker and Call of Duty insider has revealed new information on the next Modern Warfare game, claiming Infinity Ward's upcoming title is in serious trouble. If the leak is to be believed, development on a new Modern Warfare sequel, rumored to be titled Modern Warfare 4, is currently "at a standstill."
Activision has the ability to release new Call of Duty titles annually due to the rotational cycle of development teams. While the upcoming release of Black Ops 6 is being developed by Treyarch Studios, 2023's Modern Warfare 3 saw Sledgehammer Games take the helm as the lead development studio. Other Activision-owned studios, such as Raven Software, which is best known for handling the ongoing evolution of Call of Duty: Warzone, often act as support for the development of new entries. Although yet to be confirmed, it's suggested that Infinity Ward is currently working on another Modern Warfare sequel, which could be in serious trouble.
According to BobNetworkUK, who has previously revealed when fans can expect Verdansk to return to Call of Duty: Warzone, development on Modern Warfare 4 is currently "at a standstill." The leaker claims that Infinity Ward is unhappy with both the narrative and mechanics of the sequel, with Activision reportedly putting "severe pressure" on the studio as a whole. Bob also revealed numerous other details surrounding Modern Warfare 4, stating that the sequel is targeting a 2026 release and would feature remastered maps from the original Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3.
Although not clarified in the leaker's original tweet, a response from a fan mentions Black Ops 6's new omnidirectional movement system, which aims to shake up the franchise in a big way this October, to which Bob claims that Infinity Ward "hates" the new movement features that are set to be implemented by Treyarch Studios in its upcoming release. With Call of Duty's new omnidirectional movements expected to be a huge part of the franchise moving forward, fellow studios such as Infinity Ward and Sledgehammer Games will also need to implement the system into their upcoming titles. But if leaks are to be believed, that isn't going down too well with Infinity Ward.
It doesn't appear to be just Infinity Ward that is having development troubles either, as Bob also claimed that Raven Software is "behind on project deadlines," which is going to affect the release date for Verdansk's return to Warzone. The leaker claims that due to issues with Raven Software, Verdansk is now set to return in Season 2 of Black Ops 6, which will likely be released in early 2025.
Modern Warfare 4's rocky development rumors and Verdansk's potential delay will surely disappoint fans, but there's still plenty of new content for the Call of Duty community to look forward to. With Modern Warfare 3 Season 5 Reloaded releasing on August 21, followed by the first open beta for Black Ops 6 on August 30, it's shaping up to be a busy few weeks for Call of Duty players.
