Mono Blue Landfall Commander Deck Tech | Field of the Dead Edition!
This week Nathan showcases a spicy blue landfall brew for Commander that ramps an insane amount of lands onto the battlefield and features Field of the Dead as the primary wincon! This deck is mid-power casual (around a 6-7 on the power 10 scale) and is able to assemble a lethal board state by turn 9. The primary strengths of the deck are that it is hard to interact with due to so much development occurring by ramping out lands and its primary wincon, Field of the Dead, being more protected as a land itself. Conversely, the deck is weak to extremely fast aggro decks such as Edgar or Purphoros due to its low amount of blockers early in the game.
While landfall is a difficult archetype to brew in mono-blue, this deck tech overcomes the lack of efficient card options by leveraging other strengths within blue such as instant and sorcery synergies, theft, tempo plays (e.g. bounce wipes), and a couple non-loopable extra turn spells! This deck happens to be led by Baral Chief of Compliance because Nathan found that in playtesting, the deck wanted a ramp spell on turn 2. While Cosima God of the Voyage is the most popular commander to brew for a landfall deck within mono-blue, it turns out that Cosima is too slow to make an impact on the game's development plan and card draw can be sprinkled in through other means.

Mono-blue Landfall is an unconventional yet intriguing archetype in Commander, blending blue's control and tempo strengths with the landfall mechanic typically associated with green and white. Historically, mono-blue has been more focused on card draw, counterspells, and manipulation of the battlefield through spells and artifacts. However, with the rise of cards like Roil Elemental and Sunder, blue gained access to powerful landfall effects that synergize with its traditional strengths.
The core of a mono-blue Landfall deck lies in utilizing blue’s ability to repeatedly play lands, often through effects like Trade Routes or Walking Atlas, to trigger potent landfall abilities. A key strategy is leveraging landfall triggers to control the board, often by stealing opponents' creatures with Roil Elemental or resetting their land base with Sunder.
Deckbuilding techniques revolve around maximizing the number of land drops per turn. This is achieved through cards like Scapeshift, Crucible of Worlds, and Azusa’s Many Journeys. Card draw is equally important to ensure a steady flow of lands; Mystic Sanctuary and Tolaria West are pivotal here. Balancing control elements with landfall synergies creates a unique and powerful mono-blue deck that can outmaneuver opponents in surprising ways.
Magic: The Gathering (MTG) is a popular collectible card game created by Richard Garfield and first released by Wizards of the Coast in 1993. It combines strategy, fantasy, and storytelling in a richly immersive game where players assume the roles of powerful spellcasters known as Planeswalkers. Each player builds a deck of cards representing magical spells, creatures, and artifacts, using them to battle opponents in a competition to reduce their life total to zero. The game is played using a variety of card types including lands which provide mana to cast spells, creatures that are used to attack and defend, and instants and sorceries which produce powerful one-time effects.
Magic features a complex ruleset and deep strategic elements, with gameplay that often involves constructing decks tailored to specific strategies, known as archetypes. With various formats like Standard, Modern, and Commander, MTG offers diverse gameplay experiences. Its expansive lore, numerous expansions, and continuous updates keep the game fresh and engaging. Players enjoy the dynamic nature of deck-building, strategic planning, and the thrill of both competitive and casual play. The game's rich universe and complex mechanics contribute to its enduring popularity and global community.
