this map is a somewhat surprising addition to moonblood, especially. unlike most maps in the wad, this one is almost entirely linear, only really offering a choice of which of two wings you want to clear out first. on the other hand, since there are many fewer ways to approach any particular encounter, the map is able to force a lot more pressure out of fewer monsters. before reaching the second half of the map, rockets and cells are in very short supply, and you'll probably wish they weren't when grabbing the BFG and unleashing four archviles on to a pile of imps you just killed along with a handful of revenants to complicate things. that leads to a large area with a lot of snipers and relatively limited cover... with the best cover having a cyberdemon in it. i chose to cower behind the stairs instead even if it wasn't as protective.

side note: you'd think two-shotting cybers would be like riding a bicycle but i find the muscle memory fades pretty quickly unfortunately. fortunately with a bit of practice i had the muscle memory in my hands again.

anyway the central area following this is rough and there's three fights in sequence. it's small, has three boxes for cover, and makes you take a lift out to go anywhere else. by far the meanest ambush here is the one after clearing the left wing - otherwise fairly straightforward - which drops two archviles into there. the other terrible part of this is the appearance of doomguy's mortal nemesis: descending stairs over lava. also the stairs are too steep to climb back up, so you're stuck slugging it out in a small cave with whatever ammo you have on hand. fortunately that pretty much closes out the level - there's one more archvile at the end, but you probably have a zillion cells to completely trivialize that encounter at this point.
