I've personally moved onto the OpenMW engine which is FAR more stable and variants of which include multiplayer. Things like the Code Patch, Script Extender, or Graphics Extender that mess with the game's EXE do not work in OpenMW as it's a brand new engine.
While 99% of this video is still valid, the Oblivion-Like Combat Syste mod has been abandoned. If you can find it, it should still work.

This guide is designed to help new players get started modding Elder Scrolls 3: Morrowind with an overhaul and several smaller mods.
COMMON PROBLEMS PEOPLE HAVE:
Q: The Scripted Install breaks, hangs, or otherwise doesn't work.
A: The most common solution is to make sure the program is running as an Administrator.
The most common reason for this problem is lacking proper administrator rights. Many school or university computers are unable to get proper rights, a FEW pre-built Windows 10 HOME (not pro) editions sometimes have this problem as well depending on the manufacturer.
You may NOT be able to get those rights if Morrowind is installed into C:\Program Files install it somewhere else if it's there.
Unconfirmed User Reported Fix #1: Try running the program in compatibility mode for Windows 7 along with Administrator rights.
Q: The combat overhaul isn't working.
Q: My Morrowind Crashes on startup.
Q: I get an error message when I start a new game.
A: These are all User Error caused problems that come from a failure to do one of the following:
1 - Disable Steam overlay in Steam Settings, the Overlay is not compatible with Morrowind Graphics Extender.
2 - Disable the Internal Script Extender the Morrowind Overhaul uses, needs to be done in the options for it.
3 - Have the mwse launcher running in the background, even if you launch the game from Steam, the launcher MUST BE RUNNING.
4 - Forgot to generate files for the Combat Overhaul.
5 - Forgot to ENABLE the plugins generated for the Combat Overhaul in the Data Files section of the Morrowind Launcher after generating them.
Q: Tamriel Rebuilt isn't working/installing properly, it gives me Errors/Crashes.
