Mortal Kombat 2 [Arcade, 1993]
***Secrets and Tricks Tutorial***
90s Video Games, Episode 135

PART 1: SECRETS AND TRICKS,
THAT WERE HIDDEN FOR 20 YEARS

In today’s episode, I am going to demonstrate you, some of the secrets and tricks, in the Mortal Kombat 2 arcade game. It’s unbelievable, that some of these secrets were hidden, for nearly 20 years. I am going to show you, how to access this long hidden secret. Plus, I am going to disable throwing, make my opponent slide off the spikes, show you the secret game over screen and unlock hidden characters.

Did you know that creators forgot to edit some of the sprites?

In the end of this video I am going to show you the secrets that you have probably never seen before, and are available only through the Mame Cheat Menu. So stay tuned and enjoy the video.

Secret EJB Menu

After the game has booted up, during the attract mode, quickly press the following sequence of buttons: Player 1 - Block (5 times), Player 2 - Block (10 times), Player 1 - Block (2 times), Player 2 - Block (8 times), Player 1 - Block (2 times). If entered successfully, the secret EJB Menu will appear.
Timing is extremely tight, so you might have to try multiple times before it registers. If you are not able to pull this off, you can also add following script to Mame: Now the code is: Player 2 - Block (1 time), Player 1 - Block (2 times).

It’s incredible that EJB Menu was not discovered before 2015, so it remained secret for nearly 2 decades - making it one of the longer hidden secrets in video gaming history. In addition to Mortal Kombat 2, this code also applies to Mortal Kombat 1, Mortal Kombat 3 and Ultimate.

Disable Throwing

This is only available if you are playing against a human opponent. To activate the code, both players need to hold down and high punch button before the match begins. If successful you will see it on the screen. Now neither of the players can throw the other.

Oh Wow!

This is easy! After performing a Stage Fatality on The Dead Pool Stage, you can hold Down and Block to hear Dan Forden say - Oh Wow!

Make opponent slide off the spikes

On the Kombat Tomb stage, do your character's stage fatality command. As soon as the du du duuuu music starts, both players need to hold DOWN button until the corpse starts to slide off the spikes.

Johnny Cage – logo on the pants

Johnny Cage was filmed wearing Otomix-brand athletic pants with a very visible logo. Most of the sprites had this edited out, but when doing Shang Tsung's soul steal Fatality, it can be seen briefly before his corpse withers away. Pretty awesome!

Fight Jade

You can fight Jade, if following steps are taken. At the match before the question mark, you must win, one of the rounds by using only Low Kicks and directional pad. No blocking is allowed.

If you win the first round, second round will not follow. Immediately you will be facing Jade at Goro's Lair.

Fight Smoke

You can fight Smoke, if the following steps are taken. When fighting on The Portal Stage, either in 1 or 2 player game, Dan Forden must appear at the bottom of the screen and yell Toasty! Right after you see Dan Forden, Down and Start must be held.

If you did it correcly, you will fight Smoke at Goro's Lair.

Please note! Dan Forden only appears after an uppercut. However, his appearance after an uppercut is random. You have to be lucky, and stay alert to not miss it.

Fight Noob Saibot

You can only fight Noob Saibot, if you win 50 matches in a row. And you have to do it in 2-player game, or it will not work. I wonder who discovered this secret? Winning 50 matches in a row seems pretty insane task, considering that you had to pay for every game.

Play Pong

Even more insane would be to play 250 games in a row. In the arcade version, the 250th two-player game would unlock a session of the arcade classic Pong with Mortal Kombat II sound effects.

Secret Game Over Screen

Like in the previous game, there is a secret game over screen that can be accessed, that reads: GAME OVER? 3. Possibly hinting the upcoming sequel. The screen only appeared every 30th game.

Secrets from MAME cheat menu

In Mame, there is a built-in option to enable cheats and secrets easier.

Take a look at this menu!

It’s insane that some off these cheats were actually not possible to pull off on the real machine and were added by hackers later. And some of these, I am going to show you now.

In the next episode I am going to take a look at some Fatalities
YOU HAVE NEVER SEEN!
