In "Mortal Kombat", Cole Young, an MMA fighter used to getting beaten up for money, doesn't know what he inherited, or why Emperor Shang Tsung of the Outer World sent Sub-Zero, his best warrior, a cryomancer from another world, to hunt him down. Cole fears for his family's safety, and sets out in search of Sonya Blade at the direction of Jax, a Special Forces commander who has the same rare dragon-shaped birthmark as Cole. Cole soon arrives at the temple of Lord Raiden, an Elder God protector of Earth who offers refuge to those who bear the mark. There, Cole trains with expert warriors Liu Kang, Kung Lao and Kano, the rebel mercenary, and prepares to join Earth's greatest champions in combat against the enemies of the Outer World in a risky battle for the universe. But will he feel enough pressure to unlock his arcane (the immense power that comes from his soul) in time to not only save his family, but also to defeat the Outer World for good?
