The problem with certain skills in tabletop role playing games is they kill the story and let the players circumnavigate the roleplaying aspect of the game is the dungeon master doesn't step in and do something to provent it. A d20 roll shouldn't stop the role-playing between a player and a npc. Skill checks should enhance these experiences not take away from them during the gaming session. Role Play above dice in my opinion. Doesn't matter if you are playing dungeons and dragons or some other rpg.
