Movie Review: The Lost City (2022)
A knockoff of "Romancing the Stone" with a pinch of wokeness. Although it's wokeness is only because it's how you explain a remake/reboot where the Female gets all the "good" parts and the males are just bad guys or goofballs. But it doesn't take over the film, just when you think about the film, that's what's going to stick out. For example in Romancing the Stone, the male was the hero and the Female was the brains. In this film, Sandra takes on both rolls leaving Magic Mike to be just a goof. Brad Pitt's extended Cameo character starts to play like a bad remake of the Male Hero character, but is removed for comical effect which is one of the only times that felt right, because with him in the film, the film couldn't happen.
While the film was, I guess meh, the jokes don't really land with me. Mostly just the stereotypical mad black women, that's never funny to me. And just the guys acting dumb. There are also a few jokes about Rich people ruining the world and not caring, once again after all the other stuff, I didn't laugh. While it does take a few hits at the fans of the "pink books" with them being what you'd stereotype as the people who read those books. Those moments are more sight gags and once again, didn't make me laugh. Harry Potter hams up the film when he's on screen, towards the end of film he becomes a believable villain for a moment. Showing the actor can have what it takes, but this film did him no favors. Not something that I'd ever feel like watching again, though I wouldn't turn it off. I give it a D.
