Must Have Android App: Files By Google
Must Have App: Files by Google
This is a free app from the Google Playstore that allows you to clean up your phone easily and quickly with a minimalist interface.
Once the app is downloaded you can recognize it in the app drawer as an icon with folders in it that has Google’s famous colors and the name “Files” under the icon.
Be careful not to mix this icon up with the Android System folder called “Files” which will most likely be next to this folder.
The Interface
Files by Google has a minimalist interface.
Clean
This app gets straight to the point. We start at the clean screen: At the top, we can see how much storage is used out of our total, which is what we always want to know.
Then our contents are organized into different categories underneath:
Junk files
Duplicate files
Snapchat media
AZRecorderFree Media
AZRecorderFree videos
Snapchat videos
We even have things like:
Unused apps. These are apps you haven’t used in a while or at all… This may make it easier to decide which apps to delete if you are running low on storage.
Downloaded files
Large files
Under each category, you can also see how much space is used in that specific category.
Review and Clean Up Your Files
Cleaning up and reviewing your files is a very easy process with Files by Google.
Simply click on the category you want to review and cleanup
This is done by clicking on the dialogue box that says “confirm and free up...” in blue font.
A pop up box will appear with more information.
This box has several options
See junk files
Cancel
Clear
If we want to review our files we can click “See junk files”
Here can see individual files, the storage they are consuming and select individual files for deletion if we want to be more specific.
If we desire a more direct and effective approach for freeing up space though, we can simply click the back arrow on the top left hand corner and click confirm and free up…”
Once again, the pop up box will appear and we can hit the blue rectangle with the garbage icon and the word “clear.”
Files by Google will then show you the removal process in full screen and greet you with a fun character.
Isn’t he cute?
Browse
If we want to get more into a more in depth browsing method for our files we can click on Browse at the bottom of the screen. This screen allows us to look into specific categories for different files.
Share
Share is the last available screen in the app that allows you to share files with other users who have Files by Google.
I haven’t tried this myself, but it is an option if your tech savy friends also have the app installed, which is the biggest dilemma: if your friends aren’t techy, and have the app, you probably won’t use the feature.
