For ColecoVision emulation : Do not try this ROM with VirtualColeco (horrible noise emulation) or BlueMSX v2.8 (wrong noise frequency emulation for the coleco emulation part, try v2.7 instead)

Project details :

THE SUGGESTION - First of all, making a "shoot out" ( or "thank you all" ) video was suggested by MaximumRD, another youtube user. Go subscribe to his channel.

THE IDEA - Using a real ColecoVision project with a 8-bit chiptune like music is my complete idea and I don't regret the 72 hours of work it took to make it. I like doing things in my way, and I had the feeling that it can be a great occasion to test the new devkit I'm making.

THE MEMORY - The major challenge in this project is to fit all the names and avatars in the ROM. It took many trials and errors to fit everyone in the project with the music, the charset, the type-writer effect, and the fake Youtube screen. To compress the graphics, I used RLE compression, a very simple compression technic, easy to code and decode, and doesn't need extra RAM space to work perfectly. A different compression technic may gives a better result to leave enough free space to play a more elaborate music and maybe also adding Rick Astley sprites dancing on screen.

THE MUSIC - The music itself was written in hexadecimal codes, encoding each note one by one. It was a long 24 hours process but I did make it. I did watch again and again the original video clip to ajust the notes as close as possible to the original music. Seeing a lack of space and time, I decided to concentrate only on the main part of the song and you can listen the result in this video. The noise channel is used for the beat (white noise) and also to make the bass notes (periodic noise) with the help of tone channel 3 (muted to use only its frequency value for the periodic noise). The other two tone channels left are one for the melody, and the other for the high-pitched notes.

THE CARTRIDGES - It's possible for me to make cartridges of this, it's a real ColecoVision project after all. If you want one, contact me very very soon... it will be a loose cartridge, and I will see what I can do for a label, but I can't promise.
