Like past Halo games, Halo Infinite is a shooter with most gameplay taking place from a first-person perspective. Players use a number of weapons and vehicles commonly found in the Halo series, such as the Warthog. The game features several new abilities for player character Master Chief, such as the Grapple Shot, which enables him to pull himself towards foes or retrieve items.[2]
The title's campaign mode features a semi-open world structure; players can freely explore parts of the setting, the ringworld Zeta Halo, which are segmented off from each other and initially impassable. Scattered throughout the environment are Forward Operating Bases, which can be cleared of enemies and captured. Captured bases serve as fast-travel points.[2][3] Also found across Zeta Halo's surface are other points of interest, such as "high-value targets" to eliminate, Marine squads to rescue, and Banished propaganda towers to destroy.[4] Completing these side objectives earns the player Valor, which is used to earn new weapons and vehicles players can call in from Forward Operating Bases.[2][3] There are also more linear environments within the ring's surface, that hew more to traditional Halo mission design. These "dungeons" advance the story, and cannot be replayed once completed.[5] Collectibles found in the environment, such as audio logs, provide additional story details.[6]
Infinite features a multiplayer component, with deathmatch, capture the flag, and other modes available in standard 4-versus-4 and Big Team Battle variants; the latter bumps the player count in matches from 16 up to 24.[7] New to multiplayer are ability pickups, which allow a player to activate a special power a limited number of times, such as dashing, active camouflage, and "repulsor" charges that can knock enemies and projectiles back.[8] Infinite also has a set of training modes for new players. Players can try out weapons in weapon drills, or play against computer-controlled bot players in practice matches.[9]
