Here are the reasons I made the list this way:
-5th Place - Thymesia:
Thymesia has one of the most deep, engaging and technical gameplays I was ever delighted to play.
Even though it loosely follows in Sekiro's footsteps, it comes out with a far superior combat system.
I can't fathom the fact that only seven people worked on this Indie Gem, I raise my glass to OverBorderGames!
Some boss fights are truly well made.
Couple of them are undertoned, but others are absolutely masterful, properly constructed, technical and completely deep to master.
Thymesia's only flaw is the short longevity, because it makes you want More.
Which is the reason it is at the bottom of my Top5.
-4th Place - Valkyrie Elysium:
Valkyrie Elysium has an engaging combat system, technical, deep, and particular.
You can clearly see it was made by ex Team Ninja members.
The gameplay has quite a lot of Ninja Gaiden vibes, it has a feeling which reminds a lot of it; some iconic moves like flying swallow, Final techniques with Essences, annihilation techniques, same counter system.
Additionally, the game also has quite a Devil May Cry feeling; a juggle system, same system of counters, but also deflecting and guard systems of Nioh and Witch time to slow down the time, like Bayonetta has, with perfect dodges.
Final mention for the boss fights, which are amazing and well characterized. Additionally, according to different endings, there will be various final Boss Rushes, which create an incredible climax.
Truly a wonderful experience, adrenalinic too.
-3th Place -SIFU:
Sifu is quite the indie gem, definitely one of the most engaging games I ever played;
it shows some old school Beat'em Up philosophy mixed, but translated in 3d with some action 3d games.
It has a technical and deep combat system, which definitely rewards skill and is quite satisfying to master.
Boss fights are truly amazing, absolutely well crafted and incredibly engaging.
Sifu's only flaw is, sadly, the low longevity, even though it is widely replayable, and it's possible to replay it more and more times.
-2nd Place - God of War Ragnarok:
God of War Ragnarok has some insane gameplay, as we see a more mature and experienced Santa Monica in action.
The combat system is even more technical, deeper, and evolved than GOW2018, and the boss fights are much more numerous and varied, which was a major flaw in GOW2018.
The plot is also well-liked by the writer, who appreciated the character development, especially Kratos' redemption journey and his father-son relationship.
The game is a complete package with vast worlds to explore, excellent direction, atmosphere, and an interesting story with unpredictable plot twists!
It is a strong contender for GOTY2022 and a top favorite for the writer, second only to an upcoming title.
-1th Place - Stranger of Paradise Final Fantasy Origin:
Stranger of Paradise Final Fantasy Origin is absolutely my game of the year.
The gameplay is masterful, deep, technical, and complex, one of the best combat systems in recent years. The Team Ninja never disappoints on this front, but always manages to surprise! Despite not being a Final Fantasy lover, the plot surprised me: it starts lightly and seems totally nonsense and meme, but as it progresses, everything takes on a meaning, even becoming serious, adult, and mature.
For those looking for a challenge and to enjoy this beautiful and deep combat system, I highly recommend playing it on higher difficulties and removing the Team companions, allowing the game to showcase its muscles and show just how masterfully the Boss Fights are designed with a dynamic AI that changes attack patterns based on where we position ourselves, whether.
-Special Mention - Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles Shredder's Revenge:
Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles Shredder's Revenge is a fantastic beat'em up game and one of the best in the genre, especially for fans of the Ninja Turtles. It's not quite as perfect as the KING Streets of Rage 4, but it's still amazing and even better because it supports co-op play with up to six players online. While it didn't make the Top 5 list, it's definitely worth mentioning as a game that I loved and almost made the cut.
-My Most Anticipated Game of 2023 - Wo Long:
The game I'm most looking forward to is Wo Long. I tried the demo and I was absolutely ecstatic. Once again, Team Ninja has created a spectacular combat system that's super deep and technical. The gameplay is absolutely sublime. Team Ninja never disappoints in this regard, but they managed to surprise me once again!
Thanks for watching ^^
