My Slow Descent Into Madness | The 15 Cyber Challenge (Fast Monsters)
I know I have no one but myself to blame. Despite being frustrated beyond belief at all the random bullsh1t that can make you fail here; despite shouting my lungs out at all the things that made this level UNFAIR; despite everything, deep inside, I knew that there was some fairness to this challenge, by the simple fact that the rules were the same for everyone and I knew others had beaten this challenge. I had gotten as far as 13 Cybers before, so I knew it was possible, even for my skill level...
I wish I had learned to quit a challenge, in the middle, uncompleted, and be OK with it. But I didn't. At least I made a video out of this mess. Yay. Hopefully it will get someone to laugh a bit. Maybe that'll make all of this worth it.
FAQ:
# "Why accept this challenge?"
I wanted to take a break from Zone 300 Map 15, which was getting on my nerves. Ironic, no?
# "Why fast monsters?"
I was practicing for a D2All of Zone 300 with Fast Monsters, and there are few a Cyberdemons to deal with there. So I thought to keep the same speed of things. I honestly expected this challenge to be easier.
# "Why didn't you use the extra BFG shot?"
The extra 40 cells that you are given at the beginning are just there so you don't automatically swap weapons on zero ammo. You need to keep those 40 cells for the last Cyberdemon. There is no extra shot. There are only 2 BFG shots per Cyberdemon, that's it.
# "Why are you punching Cyberdemons?"
For... fun? Anyway, after you shoot all your pistol shots, punching is the only thing that's left. If the Cyberdemon is highly damaged after the 2 BFG shots and bullets, it may die to a few punches. As explained above, shooting the BFG more than twice is not an option.
# "Why do you swear so much?"
Because it increases the RNG damage in Doom. Don't believe me? Watch this video:
"Proof that swearing influences damage RNG" - https://youtu.be/v0JzAu_v4Dg
# "Is it ALL the map's fault?"
Well, to be honest, no. Many things that make this challenge frustrating are just how doom works; such as the chance for pain state and the blockmap bug. However, there are 3 things that I blame the map for:
1 - There should be NO CIRCULAR STEP IN THE MIDDLE OF EACH PLATFORM. The big problem with this map design is that every time you step OUT of the middle circle, you have a few frames of air time during which you cannot control your movement. If that happens at the wrong time, you're dead. There's NO reason for that circle to be there on a challenge map like this. A purely sadistic choice.
2 - Each arena should have a different height. An extremely simple change that would prevent stray rockets (as seen at 4:40) from happening at all.
3 - There should be a berserk at the start. If a player resorts to the high-risk strategy of punching cyberdemons, at least give them a chance!

You can download and try the map, but unless you're a top doom player, or unless you have a very high tolerance for frustrating experiences, I don't recommend it.
