I agree the time sinks in games are bad but not as bad as microtransactions.
In fact, I think the author has it backwards. I think developers put time sinks into games because of microtransactions, not the other way around.
Putting in timers for in-game actions is intended to make you want to buy XP boosters or other boosters (drop rate, rushes for building items, etc.)
Just my opinion, though.
