My Top Six Saddest RPG Songs
This is a list of my top six saddest themes in RPGs. Why six? Because I can never seem to settle on a top five.
This list is more than just the music itself, although the music itself plays a big role in the spot, it also matters on if it's a theme, who's theme it is and why is it so sad to the character and the game itself and if the sad theme happens at a certain point in the game, what does that point entail.
Do know that I haven't played all RPGs and if there's a sadder one out there, I have played it yet. Not to mention that these are from my gaming memories. I know there are better ones out there, but these mean more to me.
This will not by my only top 6 list. There will be others sometime.
Do not read past here if you want to watch the video first and find out which songs are where before reading the reason for my choices.
#6 Chrono Trigger - At the Bottom of the Night: The song itself is pretty sad and when it plays through the game it really just converys the emotions of the scenes. The death of Cyrus, the flight of Lavos through space and fall into the orbit and onto the planet, every scene the song is in really shows the emotion the song itself emits.
#5 Shining Force - Sad Theme: Pretty sad theme here. What makes it sad is that not only is there almost always death in the scenes, but it's a death caused by Runefaust, the enemy. In each scene, it's usually filled with the last words of the deceased followed by a resolve from those effected by the death to get revenge. Not to mention this was THE strategy game from my childhood and I still hold it in the highest regard.
#4 Secret of Mana - Spirit of the Night: This one is sad just for one single moment. When the Main character is banished from his home just for pulling the Mana Sword out of it's pedestal and he only did that in order to get home. He was thrown out so the village could be protected from the monsters and left with a large adventure ahead of him.
#3 Final Fantasy XIII - Serah's Theme: Boy, are we getting to the big ones. Just knowing Serah's story in the game is sad enough, but this moment makes it much more sad. Not to mention it's usually played during the happy moments that happen just before the start of the game and it's events, which honestly make this extremely sad. However, it's not number 1 or even number 2 for me even though it's quite close.
#2 Final Fantasy Tactics - Epilogue: Delita and Ovelia's relationship is my favorite in all games, because it's tragic at first, then it blossoms into love, and finally with an extreme plot twist get's tragic again. Once you finish the game you think everything's good. Then it shifts to Ovelia when it's her birthday. However, Ovelia believes that Delita used her to become King since he did so many others. She tries to kill him and succeeds in stabbing him. In a surprise and a bit of self defense, he stabs her, killing her, then speaks into the air and asks Ramza, the main character, what he got in the end of all these events. Talk about tragic over a misunderstanding, because they really did love each other.
#1 Kingdom Hearts Series - Roxas' Theme: This explanation is short, but to those who's played the game/series, it's not needed. Roxas' Theme itself is probably the saddest I've ever heard, yet combine that with who Roxas was and how he ended up, it just makes it so sad and horrible. I don't think there with ever be a more sad moment for me in gaming, but who knows.
Intro Song: Angelzoom - Peach of Mind
