MYST (1993) | Point & Click | 1440p60 | Longplay Full Game Walkthrough No Commentary
Longplay of the legendary MYST, THE point & click game, from which a whole separate sub-genre spawned - Myst-clones, and a whole saga of MYST/RIVEN/URU games. A combination of FMV and 2D Static backgrounds all in one point & click game, developed by Cyan, released in 1993 for the first time on MacOS, then a few months later in 1994 on Windows 3.1. This here is this Windows 3.1 version of the game, running enhanced on SCUMMVM, with enhanced OpenGLnb scaling. Recorded at 1440p60 H.265 HEVC via OBS (doesn't mean it runs at this resolution, cause its most likely just 320x240x8 bits originally, but with enhanced fullscreen scaling thx to SCUMMVM to look somewhat edible).
My review & thoughts:
MYST. The Legend. The Adventure game. The Top selling PC game for a decade after its release. The one that spawned dozens, hundreds of "Myst clones", FPP adventures with mix of FMV/2D backgrounds. Might say a protoplast of Amerzone, Syberia, and Still Life trilogy.
So, about MYST itself. 6,5/10.
Was I impressed? Nope, I was not. Did I begin to understand how it spawned such a legacy? Sort of. Did I have fun? Yeah, mostly I did. Did I enjoy the morbidly complicated puzzles? Nope. xD MYST - not a godsend, not the best game I've played, not even of the better adventure games I've played. But I might know why I felt that way - because I've played multiple MYST clones before playing the actual MYST. And so I've seen quite a few more interesting, better games already. Such is the fate of an influential game like this - there just might be something much better done inspired by it, down the line. And so it does feel like this for me here, for MYST. 1993 is EXTREMELY early to make a game like this, with many hardware limitations unfortunately.

Players assume the role of an unnamed person who stumbles across an unusual book titled "Myst". The player reads the book and discovers a detailed description of an island world. Placing their hand on the last page, the player is transported to the world described and is left with no choice but to explore the island. In the island's library, two books can be found, colored red and blue. These books are traps that hold Sirrus and Achenar, the sons of Atrus, who once lived on Myst island with his wife Catherine. Atrus writes special linking books that transport people to the Ages that the books describe. From the panels of their books, Sirrus and Achenar tell the player that Atrus is dead; each brother blames the other for the death of their family, as well as the destruction of much of Atrus' library. Both plead for help to escape. The books are missing several pages, rendering the sons' messages unclear and riddled with static.
