This is our fifth month being subscribed to Video Games Monthly, there have been some highs, there have been some lows, and there have been some really unique surprises with this subscription service. The past few months I wound up with factory sealed PlayStation 2 and Wii games, something I never expected. I also wound up with some pretty cool collectibles between the first few boxes that I have received. As such, I was very excited for my August box to arrive.

Upon opening the box, which arrived around August 8th, I discovered that I had once again received a 2UP, meaning I was going to get 2 extra games over and above what I subscribe to. Unfortunately, I forgot to update my library, so I got a duplicate, but also a really cool N64 game. What arrived this month is:

N64: Star Wars the Battle for Naboo (Loose) - $20
Gamecube: Dragonball Z Budokai - $14
PS1: Namco Museum Volume 1 - $5
PS2: Metal Gear Solid 2: Sons of Liberty - $6
PS2: Final Fantasy X (Greatest Hits) - $6
PS2: Kingdom Hearts RE: Chain of Memories - $8

Total Value = $59

Star Wars: Battle for Naboo was my clear winner this month. Not only was it the game with the highest monetary value, but for what I like to collect and play, it was the best game of the lot for me. I'm not an RPG fan, so getting a second copy for FFX and Kingdom Hearts was, well, disappointing. I'm also not a fan of either Dragonball or Metal Gear, so those two also are trade bait for me. Finally, the Namco Museum may be interesting, I just need to see what games are on it.

I said it last month and I'll say it again, one thing I would like to see them add is an option to the website is the option to include or exclude specific genres of games that you would be interested in. For example, I have no desire to get a single RPG, ever. If I could select that as an option, it would help them put games in the hands of people who would enjoy them more.

While the Star Wars game was in really good shape, it was disappointing to see polishing compound left on Dragonball Z. I appreciate them running the games though the resurfacing machine, but a final clean would have taken care of the extra gunk I found. I also hope the scratch in the one disc I pointed out doesn't cause read issues.

The 2Up was great, but I have to say this was a meh box for me at best. That's to no-fault of VGM, it's a grab bag and sometimes your bag is better than other times. The previous month's offerings were more to my gaming preferences, but I have a great Star Wars game back in the collection again.
