N64 Video Comparison - Composite, S-Video, RGB
EDIT: An RGB color range issue has caused the RGB footage to appear washed out, so I would not take this video as an accurate representation of the RGB picture, except for in it's improved sharpness/clarity.
Comparison of all of the available output formats available on an NTSC Nintendo 64 (excluding the N64 HDMI mod). Shown is composite, S-Video, and RGB with CSync as sync.
Hardware setup:
- Nintendo 64 with Tim Worthington's N64RGB kit, version 1.1
- NTSC Nintendo Multi-Out to EuroSCART cable, CSync
- XRGB Mini Framemeister
- Elgato Game Capture HD60 Pro
- EverDrive64 v3 flash cartridge
The input resolution from the N64 is 320x240p, then upscaled 4x, and captured in 1920x1080p. Obviously the GameCube/Virtual Console versions of this game (and many other N64 games) are visually superior due to being rendered at twice the resolution, but this gives a good idea of the difference in image quality between video formats.
