Woo, boy... this game is more annoying than I ever recall. I honestly don't know how on earth I could play through this game so easily when I was seven. This game has it all, annoying hit-boxes, glitchy items, monsters that can kill you in one hit at full life in every stage make, and the most annoying end boss ever.
Stage 1-A: Simple enough, grab the chests, and then the Golden Egg. Well...it would be simple if it weren't for the blasted birds... These things can whittle your life away in no time. Also, the little demons in the area where you obtain the sword can one or two-shot you.
Stage 1-B: More birds...now with Whirlwinds that can throw you around, as well as Electro-men who can one-shot you! The goal here is to grab the Windsbane Spell in the upper left in order to take out the boss. The boss is a breeze (pun intended), just stand in front of him and wail away at him with the magic.
Stage 2-A: Easiest stage in the game. Fill up on food as much as you can. There's a hidden door around with another key somewhere, I found it once by accident but I could never find it again. A word of caution, the waterspout spell is bugged. Once you get it, if you enter a door or a secret door, or pick anything else up you will lose the spell and have to buy another key and get the spell again. So once you get the spell go to the far right and up to the tree top and use the spell to get the Golden Fly. Grab the shield then give the Frog the fly.
Stage 2-B: Really simple level, though the Waterblight spell is hidden, and you could look for it a while if you don't know where to look. If you want to nab the Cross of Sindarin you will need the Silver Fleece spell, so be sure to grab it before leaving the underwater area. Stock up on magic then go blast the boss in the eye with your Waterblight spell.
Stage 3-A: Climbing up can be a pain with the steam spouts. There's a secret room with a key somewhere, I just never can find it. Once you leave this area you can't go back, just fair warning. Oh, and the little demons can 2-shot you if they touch you.
Stage 3-B: Constant flows of lava from the holes in the ground make this area a real pain to traverse. Grab the key and get the Fleet Foot spell, you will need it to get the Golden Crown. Once you have the spell head to the door in the upper left (the right door), use the spell before you go down the slidey cliff and hold right as you go down, you should have enough speed thanks to the spell to go over the gap (without it you won't make it) and down to the crown. Give the crown to the Dragon in the other door on the upper left, then go int the top of the volcano.
Stage 3-C: The big demons in this area can be a pain (they can 2-shot you if they touch you). Go to the right, when the path goes down, hug the left wall to find a secret room with a key and the Gloves of Sindarin. Once you have it go back and grab the key just outside, then go all the way to the upper right for a secret door with another key. Grab the 3 chests, the one in the door in the upper center has the Firesmite spell you need. Grab some magic along the way and then go down to the lower right to fight the boss.
Stage 4-A: In order to get the Golden Tankard at the beginning of the stage you have to jump a few times on the small platform in the upper left of the small hole it's located in. Once you have it just continue along the stage. I got a little exploration crazy on this stage since I didn't remember it too well.
Stage 4-B: The chicken on the left at the beginning of the stage is poisoned, just a fair word of warning. There's a bunch of chests in this area, and all of them but 2 contain treasure. The catch is, the only to get keys here is buying them at the shop at the start of the stage, and they aren't cheap. I buy two keys for the Earthscorch spell and the Shield (though I mess up and open the chest outside of the shop by accident and have to buy another key). Once you have those, go all the way down to the lower left and enter the boss room.
Stage 5-A: I hope you have at least 2 lives by the time you make it to this stage... and I hope you can keep them and make it all the way to 5-C without taking too many hits. Trust me, you will need every little bit you can hold on to. Grab the key and the Seven League Boots and then head up to the upper right.
Stage 5-B: Linear area, just follow along and grab as much food as possible.
Stage 5-C: Fill up on magic, and head up the central mountain to fight the final, most annoying boss to ever grace a game ever. This fight took me 15 tries alone in order to finally get it, and I still nearly Game Over-ed (you don't get any continues on this stage). Once they are dead, congratulations, you've completed the game. If you manage that, give yourself a pat on the back, you've just completed one of the most difficult NES games I know.
