8The 2024 Wrangler Willys 4xe brings a range of enhancements that make this already impressive vehicle more appealing. Wider availability, a 12.3-inch sun-resistant touchscreen, improved safety features, and an optional winch contribute to its allure. Despite these upgrades, the vehicle maintains its signature off-road capabilities, subtly improving on its predecessors without drastically changing its overall structure.
In terms of design, notable changes include a shortened vertical dimension of the grille slots, compensated by wider ridges to allow increased airflow. This alteration supports the cooling needs of diverse powertrains, from a turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder to a 3.6-liter Pentastar V-6. This change facilitates a new factory-installed Warn winch. Working in collaboration with Warn, Jeep made small yet essential modifications to meet performance and environmental durability standards.
Underneath, the rear axle design on the Rubicon model has been altered to a full-floating design from a semi-floating one. This modification improves camber stiffness, overall durability, trail repairability of the rear axle, and supports an increased tow rating of 5000 pounds. The Willys package has been upgraded with 33-inch Rubicon-spec BFGoodrich All-Terrain T/A KO2 tires, rock rails, and a standard electronically locking rear differential, offering increased ground clearance and improved approach/departure/breakover angles.
The interior sees a new standard 12.3-inch touchscreen infotainment system across all trims, which offers wireless phone mirroring and built-in Badge of Honor trail guidance in higher models. The screen is robustly backlit for visibility, even in full sunlight with the top and doors off. Another interior improvement is the reengineered front seats with 12-way power adjustment, designed to withstand underwater conditions during fording. Side-curtain rollover airbags have also been incorporated, providing a secondary benefit of easier access.
The vehicle is quieter, thanks to a combination of visible and hidden changes. The external wire antenna has been replaced with an in-glass windshield antenna, and additional insulation has been added to the windshield surround in the Premium Cabin package. The plug-in hybrid powertrain's expanded availability is another significant change, despite its modest 22-mile electric range and mediocre gasoline-only fuel economy. It remains the bestselling PHEV in the U.S., representing a significant portion of Wrangler sales.
The real-world performance of the vehicle remains commendable. Its off-road capabilities, enhanced by the quiet and torquey powertrain, prove the worth of the 4xe Willys on rugged terrains. While it includes many convenience, comfort, and safety upgrades, the off-road experience remains as satisfying as ever.
