New GMC 2022 SIERRA Denali Ultimate - Interior & Exterior design details
General Motors has given the 2022 GMC Sierra 1500 full-size pickup a mid-cycle refresh that vastly improves the interior, while it's also added two new trim levels to expand the truck's breadth in terms of luxury and off-road capability.
GMC zeroed in on its key sub-brands: The luxurious Denali and off-road-focused AT4, and expanded the offerings. The moves make sense, too, as the top Denali trim accounts for 20 percent of Sierra 1500 sales and the AT4 take rate is 25 percent. Brand executives decided to elevate both ends of the spectrum. The new Denali Ultimate sits at the tippy top of the range. And the most capable off-road version is now dubbed AT4X, mirroring an update to the 2022 Chevrolet Silverado lineup that added the off-road ZR2 trim. For Sierra, the additions bring the total number of trim levels to eight.
While there are some powertrain improvements and the addition of Super Cruise hands-free highway driving assist, the bigger news for the 2022 Sierra lineup is the work done inside. The outgoing Sierra's cabin lagged behind the competition. Ram has set the bar high with the 1500's interior and the Ford F-150's insides are a close second; the GM trucks, on the other hand, suffered from too much plastic, old switchgear, and small screens.
New Face Of GMC Sierra Denali Ultimate And AT4X
GMC freshens the outside of the Sierra 1500 with a new grille and split-C headlights, which come to life when the driver approaches the vehicle and fade off when walking away. Animated lighting has become an industry trend and GM has embraced it on several new and pending models.
The new Denali Ultimate has its own distinctive dark grille with dark GMC badging, chrome skid plates, and 22-inch wheels, while the AT4X has an exclusive dark nickel grille with AT4X badging and a high gloss black skid plate. It also retains the distinctive red tow hooks from the 2021 Sierra AT4.
The 2022 Sierra 1500 adds available Super Cruise with automatic lane change. With adaptive cruise control set, when the vehicle detects that the vehicle ahead is slowing down, the car will check if the passing lane is open, safely pass the slower vehicle, and return to the original lane, all with no input from the driver. The system will automatically slow down on curves. Trailering also is now possible while using Super Cruise; it is calibrated to factor in the additional drag and increased braking distance that comes with trailering. If the vehicle detects trailer sway, control is returned to the driver. Super Cruise is standard on Denali Ultimate and optional on Denali. It is also optional on the 2022 Chevrolet Silverado High Country, the fancy GMC's mechanical twin.
The complaints are being remedied. Hop into the new Sierra 1500 Denali Ultimate and AT4X, which each have unique interiors, and the first things you notice are the premium materials and new screens, as well as an attention to detail that had been missing before.
There is now a 12.3-inch digital gauge cluster in front of the driver and a 13.4-inch central touchscreen offering a 65/35 split display and Google built-in capability, including Google maps and Google assistant, as well as Apple CarPlay and Android Auto compatibility. The screens are a vast improvement from the previous ones, which were only 8.0 inches each. The larger screens are well integrated, nestled between the vents and the HVAC controls, and are standard on all but the Pro work truck. With the available 15.0-inch head-up display in place, the 2022 Sierra offers 40.0 inches of total screen area.
Sitting in the Denali Ultimate, the new level of detail includes a topographic map of Mount Denali etched into the open-pore engineered wood on the glovebox. A map of the summit is also laser etched on the doors, map pockets, and on the two-tone black and brown heated and massaging leather seats. The cabin is a sea of leather, and in the Denali Ultimate, the hide has a second finish to give it more texture. Aluminum trim brightens the dash and steering wheel. The headliner and pillars are covered in synthetic suede. It amounts to more premium materials overall and a lot less plastic.
A nice touch is the hand-sewn unique big stitch pattern used on the perforated leather seats with white piping and metal "Ultimate" badges. Each of the two-tone floor mats looks like a Berber rug with a metal GMC badge in the corner. The second row duplicates the front, with the same attention to detail, materials, heated seats, and laser-etched maps. Rear passengers have two USB ports and air vents but no dedicated HVAC controls.
