Went back to play the Mage in season of discovery after reaching on the Hunter level 25. I believe that Mages at 40 will have an interesting set of tools that will allow them to pop huge DPS numbers and also solo content.
Mages in Season of Discovery get some amazing runes that completely change the way Mages will play in all PvE content. Typically in Classic Mages are delegated to a rather stale rotation early game with playing Frost and spamming Frostbolt. Well those days are long gone. While Frost got a few new runes to add to their Frost toolkit like Fingers of Frost, Ice Lance and Icy Veins, that's more of a PvP spec and now the meta has moved to playing Arcane or Fire.
Fire Mages were a powerhouse in Classic. Once you could leave the icy cold of the Frost build behind and finally start warming up with Fire, Mages became the premiere caster in any raid, with massive Ignites and hard hitting Fireballs. Now with Season of Discovery you gain a few amazing runes to add to the already powerful Fire toolkit. Living Flame summons a huge trail of spellfire that will move towards the target, burning everything in it's path. Living Bomb is one of the most iconic Mage spells from Wrath of the Lich King and further expansions. This is a massive DoT that after 12 seconds explodes for a ton of AoE damage. It will also explode if it gets dispelled, making it a powerful tool in PvP. Lastly Burnout increases your crit chance with ALL spells by 15%! All in all, Fire mage is looking very strong. The only thing that we need to know now is how our mana will do with Fire in the first phase since the level cap is 25 and Mages typically don't have too much Intellect that that level.
Arcane Mages existed in Classic, but more so you just take a lot of their talents in order to get it's powerful cooldowns Presence of Mind and Arcane Power while casting Frost spells in the early game. The problem with Arcane at the time was that you didn't have a lot of options of Arcane spells to cast outside of Arcane Missiles and Arcane Explosion. Well, Season of Discovery brings some new spells for the Arcane. The infamous Arcane Blast is in Classic. A lot like the TBC/WOTLK version, except this version does not buff Arcane Blast, but buffs every other Arcane spell. Arcane Surge is another new unique Arcane spell that unleashes the rest of your mana in one big burst of Arcane energy and can do up to 300% more damage, based on how much mana you have when you cast it. After you cast it, you gain 300% mana regeneration. All in all, whichever spec of Mage you choose to play will be strong, and most importantly fun.
