In 1998, Refused would release their seminal masterpiece The Shape Of Punk To Come, a monument to their own influence on the sound of hardcore and crossover punk in the 2000s, that would nonetheless come packaged with warnings about not selling out, whose biggest song New Noise predicted a dark future where the punk ethos as it was would not be enough to become popular as it lacked the populist ideals of mainstream culture; to get there, it would have to be watered down and cheapened from art with real ideals down to petty peddlings of bourgeoisie-palatable philosophy packaged in what appeals to the lowest common denominator, wherein the endgame would be that punk rock would be playing catch-up to and especially alongside the mainstream zeitgeist rather than leading the way through sticking to their own rebellious attitudes and never settling for complacency in art...and if you think I'm joking, go read the liner notes. Shit's basically just a manifesto.

The next year would see the release of a little known indie rock album called Enema Of The State. Make of that what you will.
