New StarCraft & Warcraft RTS games for PC Game Pass from Blizzard under Microsoft in the future?
Will Microsoft bring us Warcraft 4 and push for StarCraft 3 or perhaps some other forgotten RTS franchise like Dark Reign now that Blizzard is under new management? Could it invest in a totally new game world and lore from scratch or buy a license for intellectual property like the book series Song of Ice and Fire more commonly known as Game of Thrones?

Let's start with the topic of new sequels to our old favorite RTS games. What could we expect from WarCraft 4? The technology for advanced and improved gameplay as well as game design is there, for both campaign singleplayer and cooperative or PvP multiplayer. A new engine or a serious facelift of the current one used for StarCraft 2 would be in order if it is to look good. It also has to have room to implement all the improvements to multiplayer matchmaking, casting and replays developed over the last decade.
Eye candy in the form of cinematics is something I would definitely expect here. All of us have watched hours of incredibly dynamic and beautiful cinematics and even full on mini animated series from most of Blizzard’s games. The latest ones on the lore of Overwatch display this perfectly and I recommend you watch them for the simple delight even if you don’t like the lore or characters.
But lore… where do we even go for lore in WarCraft 4? Certainly not the current World of Warcraft universe which has molded and reshaped the original lore to create a twisted mockery of the original. My best idea would be for a prequel story with new characters of previously unexplored eras and locations. Or, if we must pick up where WarCraft 3 left off, then we pull a Marvel and create a new timeline or an entire universe separate from World of Warcraft’s lore. You can tell me your ideas in the comments below.
The most important point however is where do we get the people who know how to make a good WarCraft real time strategy game? The ones that made the last one are long gone from Blizzard Entertainment and have even made new studios themselves like the people behind Frost Giant Studios. They are at this very moment developing Stormgate which looks like a mix of StarCraft and Diablo lore, but plays like a true modern RTS with many of the improvements I mentioned WarCraft 4 would need.
Giving such a project to an outside studio, like Activision did with the now infamous WarCraft 3 Reforged game remaster is obviously a bad idea. Every time I even mention that game I feel like we need a minute of silence to contemplate the enormity of that failure. This is why I think finding the right people for the job is the biggest hurdle for this project and many of you have commented the same on my community polls over the years.
I know this is on your mind as much as my own in addition to what current games from Blizzard's lineup could show up on Microsoft's PC Game Pass in the near future some of which were already kind of soft confirmed. Like Diablo 4, Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3, StarCraft 2, Overwatch 2, Crash and Spiro remakes
