I'm not even halfway done with the game and I got 99 lives, lol! well, as they say: It's not how many lives you have, it's how many you use that determine a game's difficulty.

Edit, because "some" people are too impatient to hear the answer as to why Mario loses his hat in a later part when I got it, it IS because you get 99 lives. They made it an easter egg for life collectors or those who are just generally good at the game.
