New Tales from the Borderlands Review
0New stories, same charm, new challenges.
The fact that New Tales from the Borderlands exists at all warms my heart, considering that it had to defy the death of Telltale Games. The original episodic adventure from 2014 won me over with a great script, a sharp sense of humor, and likeable protagonists in the form of Fiona and Rhys. While the unrelated sequel with the full game in one box does a lot of things right, its attempts to flesh out the Telltale formula – not to mention runtime – get bogged down in what would otherwise be fun romp on a new planet. with a new cast of anti-heroes.
What I love most about New Tales from the Borderlands are the three new main characters: the prim, know-it-all scientist Anu; her smart, fame-seeking adoptive brother Octavio; and furious frozen yogurt shop owner Fran. L0u13 (“Louie”), a killer bot who begins to question the purpose of his existence and causes much laughter by the end of the credits, also participates in the trip in a non-playable role. New Tales was developed by Borderlands developer Gearbox after Telltale’s demise, but the quality of its characters and their humor is pretty consistent.
