Summary: Diego Delgado, software senior expert for cloud and platform services at Mercado Libre, shares how Google Cloud helped the online marketplace make a big data move towards AI innovation. Mercado Libre migrated its messaging service to Google Cloud, unlocking new opportunities to accelerate innovation, deliver better user experiences, and embrace the latest data and AI technologies — including generative AI.

Challenge: Mercado Libre produces over 60 billion messages a day — more than 1 million messages per second — which must be processed, stored, and served seamlessly to millions of users. Mercado Libre wanted to reduce the burden on its development teams to keep pace with this immense scale while still enabling real-time, scalable, and reliable data streaming.

Solution: Mercado Libre migrated from its open-source data streaming and messaging platform over to Pub/Sub — Google Cloud’s fully managed real-time message service — without any impact on the business or any engineers updating a single line of code. With Pub/Sub, Mercado Libre can now deliver real-time data to thousands of services across its platform and significantly minimize the amount of time developers spend maintaining and managing infrastructure. In addition, Mercado Libre uses BigQuery to backup and store all of its messages, increasing the reliability and resiliency of its services.

Results: Now, developers have more time to spend driving innovation and exploring ways to improve user experiences, such as incorporating gen AI into Mercado Libre’s platforms and processes. Already, Mercado Libre is working on over a hundred projects with Gemini — Google’s multimodal gen AI model — covering various use cases across the entire organization, from generating text and images to accelerating development processes.

Key takeaways and highlights from our interview with Diego Delgado, software senior expert for cloud and platform services at Mercado Libre:

→ “The migration [to Pub/Sub] was carried out without any of our thousands of engineers having to touch a single line of code.”

→ “Pub/Sub is a fully managed service. Instead of maintaining the infrastructure, we can spend this time driving innovation and improving user experiences.”

→ “Mercado Libre is currently working on over 100 projects with Gemini in many different use cases. We are currently experimenting with Gemini Pro, comparing [and] generating images. One of the most exciting things is the way that a developer can, in seconds or in minutes, solve a problem that in other scenarios will take hours.”
