Halberds! Eye-patches! Ghosts! Pensive elevator rides! Join me as I play through Halberd Studios' recent Metroidvania, the 90s anime-inspired Nine Years of Shadows! Nine Years of Shadows features beautiful pixel art, the classic Metroidvania mechanics we all know and love, and a hauntingly beautiful soundtrack by the LEGENDARY composers Michiru Yamane (Castlevania), Manami Matsumae (Mega Man), and Norihiko Hibino (Metal Gear Solid).

In this episode we begin to explore some of our multi-elemental skills, solving more gate puzzles (barf) and swapping between our armors to utilize our various skills to travel through Talos. We explore more of the Eucalpytus Garden, debate the greatest water level theme song in video game history (obviously Aquatic Ambience),and begin our first foray into the upper chambers. We meet Europa's edgy former trainer, Draythus, who we summarily tell not to come near us or our spirit guide, Apino, again. We score the sweet Olympian Strike ability to open up more swaths of the map.

Then, we meet the mysterious painter Van (who gave off some serious L from Death Note vibes) and explore his Portrait of Despair, where we score the sweet Serpent Form (AKA Morph Ball at home, lol). We encounter the Shadow of Despair, a boss with one of the most METAL designs I've ever seen, who sent us through the seventh circle of bullet hell. To wrap the stream up, we face off against weird futuristic cowboy Issa, who we ruthlessly ice like a soy macchiato. BONUS: Pensive elevator rides!
