A playthrough of Gametek's 1993 racing game for the Super Nintendo, Nigel Mansell's World Championship Racing.

In this video I play through the full season mode on the arcade difficulty level.

You really have to hand it to Gremlin Graphics. Between the Lotus, Top Gear, and Super Cars series, they more than proved themselves with the quality of their racing games. This upgraded PC-to-SNES port of Nigel Mansell's World Championship Racing carries on that winning streak, I'm happy to say.

It's a Formula One racer that plays a lot like Sega's Super Monaco GP, but this one gives you sixteen tracks around the world to tackle. You get a few customization options that'll let you tweak your car's handling to your style, the track layout, and the course conditions, and you can do a qualifying lap to decide your place in the starting grid. Beyond that, it's just you, the road, and a lot of other famous drivers getting in your way.

(Actually, now that I think about it, this is *very* similar in most ways to Top Gear 2! https://youtu.be/LRatZm8DpLM )

While the game doesn't do anything to reinvent the wheel, it absolutely nails the execution. The tracks look fantastic and the scenery flies by with a good sense of speed thanks to the smooth framerate and scaling effects. The controls are easy, the cars handle well, the AI racers put up a decent fight without resorting to cheap tactics, and the variety in the track layouts make for a good test of skill. The sound is also pretty good. I do wish there was more music and that it played during the races, but the whine of the engine and the rest of the sound effects are fairly convincing for a 16-bit game, and they provide some useful audio cues for when your attention is totally focused on the road in front of you.

I played the Game Boy version of it to death as a kid, but for as much as I enjoyed it, the SNES game is so much better. I really can't say enough good things about it. If you enjoy racing games, Nigel Mansell's World Championship Racing is a game that you'll thoroughly enjoy spending time with.
