NINJA GAIDEN Enemy and Combat Analysis - "By the Numbers," Episode 3
0:00 Intro
3:12 NGB Chapter 3 [Normal]
Hey everybody, Guilty here with Ninja Gaiden: By the Numbers, Episode 3. Analysis presented in this episode is from NGB, Chapter 3, on normal difficulty, and we have a new enemy type and a weapon upgrade to discuss. If you like what you see, please feel free to give the video a like; and if you don’t want to miss the next episode, be sure to subscribe to the channel and turn on notifications.
Onboard the zeppelin are Special Weapons and Tactics soldiers, also known as SWAT, dispatched to hunt Ryu under the direction of Robo from Chrono Trigger—Dynamo. There are two tiers of SWAT to contend with—seemingly junior and senior officers—distinguished by a black shader to the clothes and a red shader to the lenses of the goggles the “senior” soldiers wear. However, there is only one SWAT model in its respective afs archive and only one instance of “SWAT” mentioned in the game’s executable, the same file in which I have seemingly found the proper names for all the character models (e.g. KASEKI KYOURYU/Fossil Dinosaur for chr_kasek, GUURU/Ghoul for chr_guuru).
With that context provided, in my run of Chapter 3, I encountered 29 “junior” SWAT and 7 “senior” SWAT.
The standard health value for the “junior” SWAT is 320 points. 19 (or 66%) of the junior officers spawned at 320; 6 officers spawned with 400 points, a 25% health increase; 4 officers spawned with 420 points, a roughly 30% health increase.
The standard health value for the “senior” SWAT is 900 points. In this run, all of the senior SWAT spawned with 900. But in previous runs, I had also encountered enemies with 850 points and others starting out with 1000 points. As you can see, due to the random nature of this game and however things work under the hood, two runs of the same chapter can be markedly different.
In this episode, I perform my first weapon upgrade on the Dragon Sword, boosting it to level 2. The upgrade increases all attack damage with the sword by 50% and unlocked new techniques, such as Fang of the Wolf, Blade of Nirrti, Violent Gale, Flying Crane, and the Flying Swallow. I plan to present and analyze every attack in the technique list for each weapon, across all weapon levels, in a future video—because I’m extra, and you deserve it—but I can include a small bit of my research here to give you an idea of what’s to come.
Regarding the Dragon Sword, the most-powerful level 1 attack is Fiend’s Bane Kick, XX→XX. Called the Purifying Demon Kick(浄魔蹴り)in Japanese, this technique does 380 base damage, but has the potential for 200 more if that enemy is kicked into a wall.
The level 2 Dragon Sword can inflict the most damage with Blade of Nirrti, XYXXXX. Originally named Rakshasa Slash (羅刹斬) this attack can inflict 1035 total points if performed from the ground, but even if performed in-air, XXXX, damage output is still out in front with an impressive 690.
We’re going to Tairon next and there is still so much more left to discover.
