I have tried swapping Ryu with about 95% of the other models in NGB. So far, it would seem the characters with larger memory "lengths" (greater than 1MB) consistently error out and soft-lock the game. This includes Ayane, Rachel, Doku, Murai, large boss fiends like Ishtaros and the Vigoor Emperor, as well as the Berserkers/Titans. This theory has additional credence because Gamov's "length" is 910880 bytes and he "functioned" about as well as one would expect, but any others with .kmd's over 1 MB refused to function.

Spirit Doku was the exception--his model is about 700KB, but because the game loaded past the start screen, yet froze at the chapter introductory screen, my theory is the game might've just not known how to map him to Ryu's wireframe. It would have been fun, but it seems running around as Doku or Ayane is out of the question--for now.
