Shooting someone, throwing him in prison, then asking him to escape sounds a little convoluted to me, but the action's got to start somehow I suppose. The difficulty really shoots up in this stage. There are many pitfalls, and many strategically placed enemies to make you fall in them. You will learn to hate the many enemies that rush
out of nowhere to do nothing but ram into you. Having special weapons will help in that regard (particularly the
spinning jump attack, which makes jumping much safer; it's almost necessary in a few places later in the game). The boss is not a problem, though I forgot one could simply duck to avoid his weapon (it's been a while). Ah well, I wasn't in that much danger.
