NINJAS VS THE SATAN || The Ninja Kids || Arcade Appreciation #8 (Arcade/MAME)
3Welcome to the latest edition of Arcade Appreciation! Today's game is Taito's awesome ninja hack and slash game The Ninja Kids, released back in 1990, and is the ever-so classic beat 'em up brawler that was popular during the time. The game tasks four Ninjas, Hanzo, Sasuke, Akane, and Genta with the task of stopping some evil group from resurrecting "THE SATAN" - and yes, you have to type it out as "THE SATAN", since that's how the game calls him. I guess there must be knock off Satans? Anyways, part of what makes this game awesome is the fact that not only are these ninja color coded for your convenience, but they also have different weapons and powers that they can use: Hanzo uses a Katana and controls water; Sasuke uses a kama and controls wind; Akane uses shuriken and controls fire; and Genta uses a sansetukon (three part staff) and controls earth. You can utilize the ninja powers by collecting scrolls, and the more you collect the greater the power and damage you deal - though you can only use up to four at a time. There's also other bonus powerups you can collect such as turning into your ninja's element, an elemental barrier, time stop, food to restore health, and collectibles that increase your score.
As you'll soon notice, the game has a very colorful, tongue in cheek feel to it, despite the rather somewhat dark premise of trying to bring back THE SATAN. It's just a generally all around fun, light hearted game. It's also not too difficult of a game, as I found myself starting to get better and better at it in a short number of playthroughs.
The game never got a proper home port until 2005 where it appeared on the Taito Home Legends #1 on the Xbox, PC, and PS2. I actually used to have the PS2 version of that collection and...remarkably this wasn't where I heard about this game; I actually played it on a friend's computer and for whatever reason it stuck out with me for all these years!
