Nintendo Game Design: Teaching Without Tutorials
Nintendo has crafted a large number of top quality video games over the past few decades. The company's stellar game library has given it a strong reputation for quality. Without a doubt, Nintendo employs some of the best game designers and developers in the entire world.
"When I look back at many of the Nintendo games I enjoy most, I notice one thing that many of these games have in common-- the experience flows from beginning to end and there is a really low amount of friction. There aren’t usually any control manuals to read or real static tutorials to follow. There is just an effortlessly smooth player experience, which generally leads to a game that you never want to put down until it's done. This type of experience isn’t just born naturally, but it almost seems like magic. The very best Nintendo games are nearly frictionless. They “teach you as you go,” as the designers weaved important teaching moments into the very fabric of the game, creating seamless tutorials that just seem to fade into the background."
In this video, I explore some of my favorite examples of these moments, illustrating some of the ways Nintendo teaches without tutorials. Also, I analyze some of the creative ways Nintendo has introduced big new concepts or ideas to players over the years.
