Nintendo is "constantly researching technology" for its next console.
The gaming giant's president Shuntaro Furukawa has opened up on the company's plans for the new hardware coming after the Switch, and noted that the goal is to "propose new forms of entertainment".
Speaking to Nikkei, he said: "In order to create a single piece of hardware, we have to do a lot of preparation several years in advance, so we are working without stopping.
"In the end, the deciding factor in whether or not to commercialise a product is whether it can create a new experience."
The Switch dropped in March 2017 and continues to be a hit with fans, with sales outpacing the PlayStation 2 - the best-selling console ever - over the same time period.
Thus, Furukawa doesn't expect Nintendo to replace the console anytime soon.
He added: "We always say that we are in the middle of the Switch's lifecycle, and since one piece of hardware can be used to play both stationary and portable games, we can offer a wide variety of software for this purpose.
"The life cycle can still be extended."
This comes after reports the company is working on an upgraded version of the Switch, while Nintendo has denied that this is being released in 2021.
