2The twilight over Jusanzakura felt heavy, as if the village itself held its breath. Whispers of yokai stirred unease among the people, and I was called once more to banish the darkness that clung to their homes. With my staff at my side, I followed the faint echoes through a field littered with bloodstained graves.
There, among the silence, a small Scampuss appeared—its strange, soft form purring against my leg. I bent to touch it, and in that instant, the world shifted. Shadows ripped apart the quiet, and Gaki lunged from the earth with gnashing teeth. Their numbers pressed against me, but fire and water coursed through my talismans, searing and quenching their twisted flesh until none remained.
No sooner had the first wave fallen than Oni-bi lit the air with flame, joined by a lumbering Yoki. I struck fast, breaking the spirits before their fire could consume me. An Enki came next, bounding with cruel precision, but my staff found its mark, breaking the beast beneath the weight of spell and steel.
The ground trembled as the true terror arrived—Gozuki, horned and massive, its bull’s face glistening in the half-light. It roared, shaking the graves, and the Dark Realm swallowed us whole. My breath caught as my stamina waned beneath its oppressive weight, yet still I stood. Each strike of its weapon shattered earth, each charge threatened to end me. But I waited—patient, steady—for the rhythm of its fury.
When its weapon came crashing down, I met it with a Burst Counter, the shock splitting through its body like thunder. Blow after blow, spell after spell, I carved away its strength until, at last, the beast crumbled.
Silence returned. The Scampuss pawed gently at my robes, as if to remind me that not all yokai meant harm. Yet in the stillness I could still feel the weight of that voice in the twilight—ominous, lingering. Darkness had been driven back, but only for a time.
