Nitemare 3D (1994) · Original Soundtrack · MS-DOS AdLib / OPL2
Nitemare 3D is a horror-themed first-person shooter game that was released in 1994 by Gray Design Associates for MS-DOS and Windows 3.x platforms. It is the first game to use the WinG interface, which allows for more realistic graphics and sound effects. The game follows the story of Hugo, a young man who must rescue his girlfriend Penelope from the evil Dr. Hammerstein, who has kidnapped her for his nefarious experiments. Hugo must explore Hammerstein’s mansion, caves, and a twisted alternate dimension of demons and aliens, using various weapons and magic items to overcome the obstacles and enemies.
The game consists of three episodes, each with ten levels. The first episode was released as shareware, meaning that players could download it for free but had to pay a fee to unlock the full version. The full version came on two floppy disks with a guide to the game’s thirty levels. The game features pixelated graphics that resemble those of Wolfenstein 3D, but with no textures on the floors and ceilings. The music was composed by David B. Schultz, who also worked on Quiver.
Nitemare 3D is a challenging and atmospheric game that tests the player’s skills and nerves. It has many secrets and hidden panels that can be activated by collecting magic eyes or crystal balls. The game also has a unique feature that shows the player’s health as their skin wears away, leaving a skull when near death or dead. This adds to the horror element of the game and makes it more immersive.
