I am rocking an i7 4790k and an GTX 970, both Overclocked, I'm also on Windows 10 and this is a huge factor aswell. For example there was recently a Windows 10 anniversary update that pretty much fucked up the entire system. I had to disable a bunch of services and processes to even remotely bring it back to an operable state. I have also tested the game on a Windows 7 machine and it runs pretty much the same, but again the hardware is just compensating for the game's poor optimization. And I get it, a team of 20 people will face such issues with their games 10 out of 10 times. They simply don't have enough quality control staff to be able to deliver a polished game for the release. The thing is optimizing a game for the PC is probably the hardest part of the development, the number of factors is 18 quintillion(get it?). You have to factor in different types of hardware, different operating systems, compatibility with different versions of different operating systems? It's shit.
In Conclusion the game's performance right now will not impact my score for this review. It remains to be seen if Hello Games can quickly fix all the issues or not.
Graphics:
The game uses this sort of cartoonie feel for the graphics. And personally I think it fits. Some people will dislike it, would want more realism, but the colors and the assets match perfectly and I think its a stunningly looking game. When it comes to the graphics options, however, the player doesn't have much control over what the game looks like. More graphics options would've been preferred. Take The Division for example, you have over 30 options for various graphics assets ranging from Textures to Sun-shafts and even Vignette effects and whatnot. The problem I have with the graphics is that no matter how much you crank the game up, there is noticeable pop up. When you land on a planet, the surface generates under your ship and it will always do. There's no surprise that the game is only 3 gigs on the PC.
The big one. Its really hard to review this game as a lot of people were expecting something different. This is Hello Game's fault entirely in my opinion. They've been marketing the games for the last 3 years and they could never explain exactly what the game will be. They've been dodging questions like Mike Tyson dodges punches and this has left a lot of people disappointed. The game in it's core is an exploration and inventory management simulator. To a lot of people this is great, this is what they wanted and this is what they got. However there's also a lot of people who expected Multiplayer(a working one), space battles and some form of progression other than the expansion of your ship and exosuit's inventories. While Hello Games never promised such features, they did promise multiplayer. We knew the game will be mostly singleplayer from the start, but would progress and turn into a multiplayer experience, even if not all of the gameplay. We were on more than one occasion promised that we can enter other player's lobby and visit their planets. 2 players stood on the same spot on the first day and could not see themselves. Sean Murray claimed this was due to a server issue, but frankly I think this feature is not even in the game.
The game will take you on a quest to repair your ship, upgrade your multi-tool and exosuit and eventually try to reach the center of the Universe. There's no story, rather scribblings from previous explorers and the occasional NPC that is tied to one of 3 factions, The Atlas, The Korvax, The Sentinels, The i dont even know, it might be more than 3 factions. You will find yourself repeatedly mine resources for various purposes, mainly to upgrade your gear and to rack up those units which you can use to purchase or sell again said resources to other explorers(NPCs) or to the galactic federation trade centre or whatever. Getting to the center is not an easy task however, If you go for it- it will probably take you about 30-40 hours to get there, however you have no reason to rush, I don't know whats at the center, so far I've managed to stir away from spoilers, but I also don't expect a mindblowing reveal. Maybe once you get to the center, multiplayer is activated(ha-ha-ha,no..).
It gets repetitive, a lot. While the planets and animals and plants look different, it's still the same thing. You land, you mine, you sell your resources, the occasional interaction with an NPC and off to the next planet. If you are amazed by discovering different locations, plants and animals then this is the game for you. If you need a sense of achieving something I'm sorry to say this isn't it. gaming The Division 2
