My entry to Global Game Jam 2021 uses an idea I had originally used for the 2020 Zoom Game Jam where a set seed is used to simulate online multiplayer between players.

I've since started learning how to properly implement online networking in games, however at the time this seemed like a genius work around and I thought I would expand upon the idea with Global Game Jam this year.

Naturally networking is used, but it's done over a service such as Discord. The idea is that the only real interaction players can have between each other's games would have to be done over the VOIS (Voice Over Internet Service, my play on VOIP) so naturally you would think to use some sort of password. Therefore if both players set the same seed before playing, the passwords that each of their games' generates will be the same. Then you design the game around giving players passwords as sort of a checkpoint system to keep track of their progress through the game.

In the case of No One is Home, players work together the decipher the code based on symbols scattered around the map. When they've successfully deciphered the code, Player 2 enters it and is given a code to give to Player 1. When both of them have entered the correct code, both player's game's are refreshed to show them the second code they have to decipher acting as my way of checking their progress.

I think it's a pretty clever system and as far as I'm aware it hasn't been done before, so I'm very interested in seeing what can come out of this! For example you could have a puzzle game where after one player completes a part of the room, they get a code that they can pass on to the second player to let them get through they're section.

Super curious to see if and how the community can iterate on this idea and I hope to see more games I get to play with my friends while we all self isolate :)
