I was playing vanilla Half-Life from Steam; not Source, and without any mods or file changes. I had just downloaded the game and verified my files.

Barney here should die and instantly gib from a single hit by the tentacle alien. However, the script where he runs forward screaming "Hey! Over here!" and shooting his pistol, broke in this playthrough. This caused Barney to move further along the platform and made the tentacle miss it's instant-death hit, dealing lower damage, and making it look like Barney would apparently be invincible to it's attacks.
