In NPC Battle Interaction, I showed how you can watch the other NPC characters fight enemies, and either join in or help them with stat buffs and whatnot, and can even see their level and HP.

Well that's in the Hollow Area, though it applies out in Aincrad's fields too. Well this is a character from the town in Aincrad. You can actually recruit them to your party just like you can with Sinon, Asuna, Klein, etc., if they're your friend, and you can take them to the Hollow Area, which is cool.

Also contrary to what gamefaqs says about Cocoa being the only non main character in the game you can romance, I've gotten one other character's love/affinity up to rank 5 (the max), which is an NPC character who totally ignores you for the first few floors. I just wanted to see if it could be done. This isn't her though.

And you can even give these NPC characters, who have no story importance, arcane weapons and different armor... IF their affinity with you is high enough.
