Mahalo math expert Allison Moffett explains six different types of common number sets.

Types of Common Number Sets
---------------------------------------------------------------------

Natural numbers are the numbers you count with: 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6,...Whole numbers are the counting numbers plus zero: 0, 1, 2, 3,...Integers include the negative values of the whole numbers: ...-2, -1, 0, 1, 2,...Rational Numbers: Any time you can express a number as an integer over an integer, that is a rational number. In decimal form, a rational number might be repeating, such as 0.333. Rational numbers also sometimes have terminating decimal representations, meaning they have a finite number of places, such as 0.145.Irrational Numbers: Irrational numbers are numbers that don't have terminating or repeating decimal representations. It means their decimal representations go on forever without repeating. They cannot be expressed as an integer over an integer. Pi, for instance, is an irrational number. Real Numbers: Rational numbers and irrational numbers comprise the set of real numbers. Most of the math we do is done in the set of real numbers.
