Expanded Form

We have a base 10 number system and we use the place values of the digits to determine the number's overall value.
Take a whole number, such as 213. Another way to look at this number is in powers of 10.
In expanded form,
213 = 2x100 + 1x10 + 3x1
= 200 + 10 + 3
= 213
These place values help to give you the value of the number.
