Any time you see a negative exponent, that means you take the reciprocal (flip upside down) of what's being raised to that power. Refer to the examples below to see how it's done.
Fractions and Negative Exponents

When dealing with fractions and negative exponents, follow the same guidelines for whole numbers. Simply flip the fraction, turn the negative exponent into a positive and apply it to the entire fraction (the numerator and the denominator).
