Long before Mario became a household name, and before Link set out to save Hyrule, there was Milk… a pink blob on a mission, starring in one of the first-ever games for the Nintendo Famicom.
Welcome to Nuts & Milk, the quirky, colorful platformer that launched alongside the Famicom in 1983, and quietly became a piece of gaming history.
But what’s this game really about?
Well, Nuts & Milk tells the story of a blob named Milk, who is desperately trying to rescue his beloved Yogurt—yes, Yogurt—from his rival, Nuts. It’s a love triangle played out across a series of increasingly tricky platform levels, with ladders, ropes, and fruit pickups.
Every stage is a race. Milk must dodge obstacles, avoid Nuts, and reach Yogurt before time runs out. Fail, and Milk is sent back to try again. Succeed, and love lives to fight another day.
And here's the twist: Nuts isn’t just a villain. He’s also in love with Yogurt. That makes Nuts & Milk not just one of the Famicom’s earliest platformers, but maybe its first romantic comedy.
Sounds simple, right? But beneath its innocent look hides a game that requires precision, timing, and strategy.
Developed by Hudson Soft, Nuts & Milk was originally a computer game for Japanese PCs like the NEC PC-8801. But when the Famicom launched on July 15, 1983, Hudson was one of the first third-party developers to bring software to the brand-new home console.
That made Nuts & Milk a pioneer. In fact, it holds the honor of being the very first third-party game released for the Famicom.
This wasn’t just another arcade port. This was a game built for the living room. With bright colors, catchy chiptune music, and 50 stages to conquer, Nuts & Milk was simple, addictive, and oddly charming.
And let’s not forget: it even had a level editor—a rare feature for 1983, letting players design their own stages.
Though the game never officially made it to the NES in the West, it found a following in Japan and among collectors worldwide. And Milk? He might not have reached Mario-level fame, but he’s remembered by retro fans as one of the first Famicom heroes.
So next time you think about the Famicom’s early days, remember this little love story. The pink blob who jumped over gaps, climbed ropes, and outsmarted a jealous rival—all in the name of Yogurt.
Nuts & Milk isn’t just a game—it’s the beginning of something bigger.
A story of love, rivalry, and 8-bit adventure.
