Nvidia discussed the demands of virtual reality headsets, such as the Oculus Rift and the HTC Vive, on a PC's hardware. According to them, VR requires 7x more power in the graphics card than a more standard PC gaming rig.

This is of course due to the high resolution of the images being displayed, and the high framerate required to make sure the user does not experience nausea.
