Obscure and Forgotten PC Demos - Test Drive 5
Continuing my tale to test Win 98 games on DOSBox-Pure, sometimes with the use of Playable Demos in a way to save the hussle of acquiring the full versions of them, comes a demo for a game which I do remember playing, yet not that many times though, but always remembered the name of because I played the PlayStation demo prior to playing the PC demo. It's Test Drive 5.
Whilst the PlayStation version has you race through Moscow, either in the fancy Dodge Viper GTS or the Ford Mustang GT in the USA demo, or in the Aston Martin Vantage or the TVR Cerbera in the PAL demo, the PC demo only has you race through Edinbourgh in either the Viper or the Chevy Chevelle SS as seen here, but in a full race this time, rather than a shortened race in the PlayStation demo. Plus, there is no music unlike in the PlayStation demo, which is actually a good thing because the full version does include licensed music tracks as does the PlayStation game. Sorry to those who were looking forward to hear some Fear Factory in the PC demo, as they were so prevalent in the PlayStation demo and in the full versions of both game ports. Total bummer......
I played the PC demo from some German PC magazine that I can't really remember much anymore. No I don't think it was PC Player, nor was it PC Games, but it was some magazine that had a CD which contained demos of not only this game, but also demos of games like X-Games Pro Boarder, Descent 3, NASCAR Revolution, H.E.D.Z. and Pro Pinball: Big Race USA. It was somewhere in around early '99 when I played the demo as well as the demos of those aforementioned games that were included on that disc that had this demo.
Game plays fine, although the shadows underneath the cars flicker for some reason, even the tire skid marks. Maybe it has something to do with 3D Emulation or maybe it's just how the game shipped. I could still be wrong though.
